About Bernard House...

Bernard House offers care and accommodation for up to four mixed gender children and young people aged between 8- 18 years on admission, at any one time. Bernard House is a large two storey detached building situated in a quiet street. The home benefits from having two separate living spaces; the living room & conservatory area, and a multi-functional space upstairs which accommodates a sensory space, relaxation space and a play area for young people to use to meet their needs.

Once children are placed within the home, their linguistic, religious beliefs and cultural needs are taken into consideration, and structured plans are put in place to support and develop the children and young people in these areas. Children and young people with additional needs will have behaviour management plans, risk assessments, and placement plans put into place with achievable targets given to ensure staff are able to support each young person fully as well as developing an effective means of communication.

“All the staff are fully trained in supporting young children with learning disabilities and hence they all undergo an extensive period of training in all aspects of personal care, medication, safeguarding and Makaton. The Homes Manager works in partnership with the local authority, schools, health and other services to ensue that the care that NHCare provides is the best for the children in our care.”

Our Aims

Our aim at Bernard House is to make everyone aware of the things children and young people need to help them to be happy, successful, healthy and safe whilst actively encouraging learning and development. Leisure time is an important element in the learning and growth process for young people, it can help in the development of positive relationships and provide new experiences for young people for themselves and on a group basis. The staff team will promote this by supporting and encouraging children and young people to take part in activities and experiences that they have an interest in to develop further. The staff team will be focusing on the interests of the children and young people in a positive way to get them to engage in new experiences and develop further experiences and interests.
